In two programmes marking the 20th anniversary of In Our Time on BBC Radio 4, Melvyn Bragg discusses Shakespeare’s versions of history,

In the first programme Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Shakespeare’s treatment of English Plantagenet history from Richard II to Richard III and all the Henrys in between, and the significant impact the plays have on the way we see those histories today.

In the second programme Melvyn and his guests (including Sir Jonathan Bate) discuss the Roman plays – Titus Andronicus, Julius Caesar, Coriolanus and Antony & Cleopatra, and the chance these plays gave Shakespeare to explore ideas too controversial for the English histories.
